Nearshore Wave-topography Interactions

چکیده

The principal focus of this program has been on understanding the nearshore problem from a top down point of view. At time scales longer than storm periods and length scales larger than 100 meters, the behavior of the nearshore appears surprisingly complex, with subtantial interannual variability and variability on all scales. We believe that this results from feedback between the fluid and bathymetric components of the system and that the coupled problem represents a nonlinear dynamical system whose phenomenology arises more from robust aspects of the feedback than from details of the various processes.

An unsteady wave driver for narrowbanded waves: modeling nearshore circulation driven by wave groups

In this paper, we derive an unsteady refraction–diffraction model for narrowbanded water waves for use in computing coupled wave–current motion in the nearshore. The end result is a variable coefficient, nonlinear Schrödinger-type wave driver (describing the envelope of narrow-banded incident waves) coupled to forced nonlinear shallow water equations (describing steady or unsteady mean flows dr...

Effects of wave-current interaction on rip currents

[1] The time evolution of rip currents in the nearshore is studied by numerical experiments. The generation of rip currents is due to waves propagating and breaking over alongshore variable topography. Our main focus is to examine the significance of wave-current interaction as it affects the subsequent development of the currents, in particular when the currents are weak compared to the wave s...

Wave Breaking and Rip Current Circulation

This paper examines the effect of current-induced breaking on the modeling of wave breaking dissipation near rip currents. Simulations using a set of existing wave transformation models are compared to existing laboratory measurements made on a bar/channel topography in the presence of both strong and weak rip currents. The model/data comparisons demonstrate that existing models can effectively...

Complex Principal Component Analysis of Medium-term Nearshore Geomorphology at North Sendai Coast, Japan

Complex principal component analysis (CPCA) is applied to examine medium-term geomorphological behavior of an exposed sandy beach adjacent to a gigantic breakwater of the Port of Sendai located near a river mouth in the Sendai Coast, Japan, using a 12-year series of bathymetry survey data. The results of CPCA and conventional real-PCA demonstrate that erosion and subsequent accretion of the sub...
